Diving Around Sanibel Captiva Islands

Diving Around Sanibel Captiva IslandsDiving Around Sanibel Captiva Islands

One of my favorite things to do is scuba dive and I’ve been diving around Sanibel and Captiva since the early 70’s. Back then you could find only a few people wondering under the water in the area but today it’s become an everyday occurrence for many.

Beside the natural dive sites you will find many Artificial Reefs consisting of anything from boats to box cars to bridges. I’ve been diving many places around the world and still think the local waters the most fun.

You won’t find a dive shop on every corner like in the Keys but there are a few good ones around.  One of the oldest, Scubavice Dive Center 12600 McGregor Blvd. Fort Myers, Fl. 33919 (239) 481-4733 e-mail: info@scubavicedivers.com which was known as Underworld Explorers when I hit the islands, has everything you need including rental equipment.

Dean’s Dive Center 15200 S Tamiami Tr. Suite 103 Ft. Myers, Florida Tel: (239) 489-0500 has been in business since the early 1990’s and was selected for the 2009 Best of Fort Myers Award in the Skin Diving & Scuba Equipment category by the US Commerce Association.

After you and your buddy have gathered all your gear and had tanks filled it’s now time to pick the dive site and for Dive Site Options there are dozens of place to look.  While they seem to have a spelling problem one of the best information sources is the Lee County website under Artificial (they like to spell it missing an letter sometimes as it does in the web address)Reefs.

You can also try Fort Myers Reefs. Each site will give you maps with coordinates which can also be downloaded in PDF format.

Before you untie from the dock make sure you file your plans with someone you can count on in case of emergency and check Regulations for Spearfishing if you intend to bring home dinner.

If you’re diving around Sanibel Captiva Islands send me some pictures and details from your dives and have a great time.

If you’re interested in helping expand Artificial Reefs visit this site for details.
